Breathing you in by Haifa Wehbe

This music video is a great example of how Arab women appropriate Western cultures and try to be more like the West.
Before even talking about the music video itself, it is important to note that this is an English song. Haifa has gone as far as actually singing in English in order to be more like the West. “[T]he influence of media outlets has some limits, for three reasons: […] third is the spread of the English and French languages in the Arab world.” (Nawar, 2007) She is a Lebanese singer widely known for her Arab charm and her Arabic songs, so it is surprising to see her do something like that. The fact that she actually now has a song in English shows that she’s supporting the Western culture and even encouraging her fans to be more Western.

She even went as far as hiring Jennifer Lopez’s ex-boyfriend and dancers to be in her music video. The actual music video is very well produced, and the first thing we thought of when we watched it was how much it resembles American music videos.

Her dance moves, her backup dancers, and the entire “feel” of the music video screams Western. Her backup dancers, whether men or women, all look Western (they probably are). Even the way she looks (her exotic and see through outfits, her red hair, and green eyes) show just how much she’s trying to be like a Western woman. “Lebanese pop stars such as Elissa, Haifa, and Nancy, among many more, represented a “charming attack against the Egyptian and Arab public” with their Western look.” (Karam, 2010, p.38)
